Dandruff is a common problem faced by almost everyone, though there may be a difference in the degree. People get embarrassed when someone shows them their dandruff, as it is always associated with hygiene. But this is not true and no amount of shampooing and showering can cure the problem. In fact, dandruff can be controlled but not cured.

Stress, faulty diet, hormonal disorder, injury of scalp, infection due to disease, constant use of cosmetics and dry weather mainly cause dandruffs. They are of two types, oily and dry. The oily dandruff is yellow in color, which sticks to the scalp and has a foul smell. On the other hand, the dry dandruff appears as loose white flakes and itches on the scalp.

For treating dandruff, daily brushing and massage of hair as well as scalp can be of great help. By this the blood circulation to scalp is stimulated and the dead skin cell, which sticks to the scalp, is removed. Persons suffering from dry dandruff should massage the scalp with oil particularly before washing their hair.

Proper diet also plays an important part in the cure of dandruff. People suffering from dandruff should eat less of animal fat and probably more of poly-unsaturated vegetable oil. Fried foods, iodized salt, chocolate, shellfish and nuts should be avoided. Diet rich in green, milk products, fish and chicken should be taken. Food high in Vitamin A., B and E complex should also be taken.
There are many homemade remedies to fix the problem of dandruff. There are different remedies for both dry and oily dandruff.

Persons facing the problem of oily dandruff can rinse their hair with vinegar. After shampooing the hair, they can rinse it with a few drops of vinegar added to a mug of water. Fenugreek seed is also good for oily dandruff. Make a paste of fenugreek seed and apply it on the scalp. Leave it for half an hour and then wash it. For dry dandruff, massage done with equal proportion of hot castor oil, coconut oil and sesame oil can be useful. But after massage, the hair should be washed properly. Another remedy for dry dandruff is to apply a mixture of yogurt, lemon juice and green gram powder on the scalp and wash it after ten minutes. One more effective way to check dandruff is to apply the mixture of eau-de-cologne and crushed aspirin. If the problem further persists, then medical advice should be taken as it can be caused due to fungal infection.

The main motto of hair care is to keep it clean. You should regularly wash your hair with an anti-dandruff shampoo to prevent the growth of dandruff. But those with oily hair or oily scalp should use herbal shampoo, as regular use of shampoo may harm their hair.
